Your Tour Itinerary:
Come and ride with Jo Rust and her team on their exciting new motorcycle adventure! Amongst other things, Jo was the first woman to have ever ridden around Africa solo on a motorcycle and the first internationally accredited female off-road instructor in Africa, so you are in good hands! It's a chance for you to get on your bike and ride it in the terrain it was designed to be ridden in. Jo will be your guide on this epic adventure and it's open to riders of all skill levels.
We start off in Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa, known as the city of gold because of it's wealth and gold rush during the 1800's. The city was named and established in 1886, following the discovery of gold on a farm called Langlaagte. From here we make our way down towards Lesotho through the Free State province which is one of the top ten maize producing areas in the world.
We head towards the Jewel of the Free State Province, Clarens and explore the famous Midlands Meander towards Nottingham Road. Beautiful smooth dirt roads will lead us to the bottom of the famed Sani Mountain Pass where you'll have the option of either riding up Sani to enjoy a quick beer at the hightest pub in Africa, or just kick back and relax at the hotel.
From the bottom of Sani we make our way through the Eastern Cape Province, catching a glimpse of the southern tip of the Drakensberg mountain range and try to catch a glimpse of the fairies in the Hogsback forrest, situated in the Amathole Mountains. From here our route leads us to visiting the majestic gentle giants that are elephants, in the Addo National Park.
After saying goodbye to Addo, we head to the coast and ride all along the famed 'Garden Route' of South Africa, sampling Knysna's renowned oysters, bask in the tranquility of the little fishing village that is Arniston, and then finish off our epic adventure with views of one of the seven natural wonders of the world - Table Mountain - in Cape Town, the mother city of South Africa.
We suggest that you arrive a day or two earlier to have a bit of a rest and shake off any jetlag that might be lingering, before being transferred to our hotel where we will be staying for the first three nights of this tour. Today you will be fetched either from the airport or the hotel where you might be staying and transferred to the hotel. Here your motorcycles will be handed over to you and we will get to enjoy our welcome dinner together and get to know one another a bit better.
You'll have one day of training with Jo Rust as your instructor. Jo is an internationally accredited off-road instructor and the training will take place at our own off-road academy. This is the perfect opportunity to get acquainted with your bike and to address any fears you may have when it comes to off-road riding. Don't be shy to ask questions!
After our training day, we will have a day off to explore the Cradle of Humankind - reknowned as the place of origin of humankind. The Cradle of Humankind is one of eight World Heritage sites in South Africa. It's home to about 40% of the world's human ancestor fossils. The Sterkfontein Caves were the site of the discovery of a 2.3-million-year-old fossil Australopithecus africanus(nicknamed "Mrs. Ples"), found in 1947 by Robert Broom and John T. Robinson.
Johannesburg to Nottingham Road
Our adventure starts in Johannesburg where we travel from our accommodation in the Cradle of Humankind, heading towards the Natal Midlands in Kwazulu-Natal and our first stop over - Nottingham Road. A beautiful village with old-world country taverns and traditional old family farmlands with green rolling hills and dotted with fly fishing dams, only 20 minutes away from the Drakensberg Mountains.
Nottingham Road to Sani Pass Resort
Today will be an epic riding day with more breathtaking sights and terrain for you to test the skills you've now learned from Jo on your bikes. We will be heading to the little town of Himeville to refuel, via some awesome twisty gravel roads and magnificent views. After refueling we head straight for Sani Pass Resort where we will be spending the night. Here you have the choice of either just relaxing at the resort, or tackling the famed Sani Pass (which is a bucket list item for most adventure motorcycle riders) and riding up to enjoy a beer in the highest pub of Africa and then back down again to have your passport stamped in and out of Lesotho. Trying our the local 'Maluti' beer is a must!
Sani Pass Resort to Rhodes
Today we cross into the Eastern Cape province and head to the town of Rhodes, situated next to the trout rich Bell River and near Ben Macdhui, the highest mountain in the Cape region, at the southern end of the Drakensburg mountain range.
This little town is filled with history. Legend has it that the town was named after the mining magnate, and then Prime Minister of the Cape, Cecil John Rhodes in the early 1900's in the hopes that he would bless the town with his beneficence.
Rhodes to Hogsback
We leave Rhodes behind and head to Hogsback, a magical town of mountains and forrests. It is situated in the Amathole Mountains in the Eastern Cape Province. It is surrounded by centuries-old indigenous Afro-montane forests where you can hear the call of the Knysna Loerie or the chatter of Samango monkeys. A highlight in town once we've arrived, is a short hike down to the picturesque 'Madonna and Child' waterall.
Hogsback to Addo
Today we take more of a leisurely ride passing through the Great Fish River Nature Reserve via both tar and fun gravel roads to bring us to Addo. Don't be concerned if Jo might get a bit emotional today as we'll have the opportunity to see some elephants in the Addo Elephant National Park. Jo's obsessed with elephants and it's (obviously) her favorite animal.
The Addo National Park is the third largest park in South Africa and boasts not only elephants, but a variety of wildlife, including....
We take a day off to explore and enjoy the beautiful Addo National Park. You can have a lie in, a lazy breakfast and just kick back and relax. There's certainly no better place to do it than here, surrounded by absolute beauty! And the magnificent elephants of course!
Addo to Knysna
Today we will cross over into the Western Cape province and head towards Knysna, a town situated on the famous Garden Route, via the famed Route 62! You'll also get to ride some of the areas best gravel roads. The town is best known for it's oyster festivals, it's lagoon and magnificent forest! Dolphins are often spotted off shore, so keep a lookout.
A day off in beautiful Knysna. Have a rest, take a stroll around the town exploring it's shops and resturaunts. Test out the local cuisines or take a walk on the beach and dip your toes in the Indian Ocean. Take a leisurely ride around the area or you can choose to take part in one of the many activities the area has to offer like boat rides out on the ocean or an adventure canopy tour through the Tsitsikama Forest area.
Knysna to Arniston
Arniston is a small seaside settlement and fishing village situated near Cape L'Agulhas, the southermost point of the African continent. Today we'll travel some good gravel roads along the Garden Route coast, before turning north to travel to our lunch stop in Barrydale, a well known town on Route 62, along the Tradouw Pass (which means Womens Path in the old Khoi language) where you will have majestic views over the Langeberg. After lunch we will turn south and head towards our stop-over for the night.
Arniston to Cape Town
After breakfast we will first head to Cape L'Agulhas to visit the famous landmark that is the southermost tip of Africa. Our final day's riding will take us along some of the best motorcycle riding roads and scenery in Southern Africa and some of the most quaint seaside villages the Cape Region has to offer. We will end off our tour at our hotel in the famous Victoria and Alfred Waterfront.
