Jo Rust Adventures Women's Day Ride
As you all may know, August is 'Women's Month' - and seeing as the 9th of August is South Africa's National Women's Day, we decided to host a short, fun outride for the day. The event started in the morning at Clearwater Motorrad in Roodepoort where we all met up for a coffee and a fun and interesting presentation by Jo and Tim (Jo's PR Manager for those who do not know him by now) on Jo's previous achievements, the launch of Jo Rust Adventures and what they're planning for the future.
We discussed Jo's previous shenanigans in short, including her solo cycle ride from Johannesburg to Cape Town in 2008. (Fastest female to cycle from CT to JHB solo). Her solo bicycle ride around South Africa in 2010. (First person to have cycled around South Africa solo - 5951 kilometers in 100 days). And of course the BIG one - setting the record as the first female in the world to have ridden around the African continent on a motorcycle solo between 2012 - 2013, covering 45 000 kilometers through 28 countries on her BMW F650GS Dakar.
Jo is the founder of the International BMW GS Girls platform and also played an integral part in pushing BMW Motorrad International to enter an Female Team in the International GS Trophy. Jo was also the first ever female marshal at the 2016 GS Trophy event in Thailand! To top it all off, she also qualified as an BMW Motorrad International Off-Road Instructor in 2015 and was one of only 4 women in the world with this qualification at the time. (There are now 5).
But that's only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Jo recently teamed up with Tim Skelton of SA Adventure (who is an avid and very experienced adventurer himself) to start up their new company called Jo Rust Adventures. They now offer motorcycle off-road training, led by Jo herself, at her own enduro park situated in Hennops, near Johannesburg and an array of excited adventure tours throughout Southern Africa. They already have two Lesotho tours (now almost fully booked) happening in November 2016 and very exciting tours coming up in 2017.
Jo plans on publishing her book in mid 2017 and doing a nationwide book tour through South Africa to do talks and book signings. So keep a lookout for news on the site and on the Jo Rust Adventures Facebook Page. After the chat we took a short ride out to Maropeng to the Sterkfontein Caves where all participants were presented with the opportunity to take a photo, which would put them into a draw to win a spot on our second Lesotho Adventure Tour coming up in November. (Congratulations to Mike Campbell for winning the prize!) We then had a lovely lunch at the scenic restaurant called: The Fat Olive Restaurant who kindly hosted us for the day. (Best lamb shank ever!)
As we were celebrating Women's Day - all the lady riders on the day who came on their bikes, got received a little gift from Jo. A complimentary one-day Intro Course at Jo's new enduro park! We're super excited about starting our training courses in the near future. (We anticipate to start with our first courses in September)
We have loads of exciting news and happenings coming up soon, so keep tuned. Until next time, The Jo Rust Adventures Team
